National Data

Healthy People 2010 identifies national health objectives for the year 2010, including tobacco objectives.

Data 2010 finds the latest data for each objective.

Examples of tobacco-related data from these sources:
(The objective number, e.g., 27-05, has two components. The first number refers to one of 28 Healthy People chapters or "focus areas" and the second refers to a specific objective within the focus area.)

State Data

CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the world's largest telephone survey. It provides state-level data on adult health behaviors, including tobacco use.

Example of data from this source:

In 2000, 21.0% of adults in Colorado had ever used smokeless tobacco. Of these, 19.7% were current users.

CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) provides data from a combination of national, state, and local school-based surveys that track tobacco use and other health behaviors among students in grades 9 through 12.

Example of data from this source:

In 2003, 63% of high school students in West Virginia reported ever having smoked cigarettes.

CDC's State Tobacco Activities Tracking and Evaluation (STATE) System integrates historical and current state-level data from many sources. Topics include behaviors, economics, tobacco control funding, health issues and legislation.

Example of data from this source:

In 1999, Nevada had 408 smoking-related deaths per 100,000 population.

Health Plan Data

HEDIS or the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures the performance of more than 500 commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare managed care organizations (MCOs) to allow consumers to compare MCOs. The National Committee for Quality Assurance's annual State of Health Care Quality report provides an overview of MCO performance. The data below on MCO delivery of smoking cessation advice is one example from this source.

Adjuncts to quit advice

Beginning in 2003, the "Medical Assistance with Smoking Cessation" measure includes two new rates:

  • Discussing smoking cessation medications (bupropion SR or nicotine gum, patch, nasal spray, or inhaler).
  • Discussing smoking cessation strategies other than medications.

Results for these measures will not be publicly reported until 2005.
