National Data

Healthy People 2010 identifies national health objectives for the year 2010, including physical activity objectives.

Data 2010 finds the latest data for each objective.

Examples of physical activity data from these sources:
(The objective number, e.g., 22-04, has two components. The first number refers to one of 28 Healthy People chapters or "focus areas" and the second refers to a specific objective within the focus area.)

State Data

CDC's Physical Activity Interactive Health Statistics provides data from multiple sources.

Much of these data are taken from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a state-based survey that tracks physical activity levels and other health behaviors among adults.

Example of Physical Activity Interactive Health Statistics data:

In 2003, 39.9% of Lousianans aged 18 and over engaged in recommended levels of physical activity; 37.5% engaged in insufficient physical activity; and 22.6% were inactive.

CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) provides data from a combination of national, state, and local school-based surveys. These surveys track physical activity levels and other health behaviors, among students in grades 9 through 12.

Example of YRBSS data:

In 2003, 39.9% of female high school students and 27.5% of male high school students in Tennessee did not engage in recommended levels of vigorous physical activity.
